Anything that is inhuman, non-mortal, not of our world. Ghosts, but also spirits, demons, gods.

[The words he uses are- well, this place is probably translating them the best it can, from the concepts of one culture to another. Ayakashi, youkai, kami. He supposes that Edwin will get the point, nonetheless. So, it's up to him whether he wants to believe in demons and the like, or not. (Until he meets one here in the flesh, that is.)]

My understanding of Western spirits is limited to some rather silly portrayals popularized by the masses, I must admit, but there seem to be some different understandings of the supernatural between us. I suppose that you could say that these are a reflection of the differing shadows cast by our respective societies, hm?

And is your specialty medical, Mr. Courcey?

Faeries, elves and hobgoblins. I would like to hear more credible accounts of those sometime; seeing where the lines blur between the truth and the fantastical misunderstandings of the Sightless are always quite interesting.

So then, if you don't have a particular inclination towards medicine, might I ask how you managed to develop such a spell? Is it a technique passed in your family?

[As someone who had little experience with magic meant to target the living, one use comes to mind. Sure, nerve endings could certainly be targeted for medical purposes- but it also sounded like the sort of thing that had a lot of other applications as well. And not just the ones the dating profile implied....]

Oh? You've never encountered them yourself? I guess I ought to call you lucky. Spirits must be far less prevalent in the West. It must have been quite a bit longer since the masses had belief in that sort of thing.

The Sightless, of course, are those who cannot see or sense the supernatural that exist in this world right beside them. We Matoba have raised our bows to protect them from the threat of harmful spirits for centuries, but since the era of exorcism and monsters ended, most don't even realize it.

[A polite line walked between duty and condescension. No, it's not that surprising, is it?]

The result of experimentation, then. I enjoy dabbling in a bit of spellcraft myself, from time to time, although I'm not precisely a researcher. But I highly respect those who dedicate themselves to that pursuit, as it has resulted in a number of revivals of arts thought to be lost in past generations, to long-defunct clans.

I'm far more suited to the execution.

Ah yes, the great influence of the West, Christianity. I don't know a lot about the history of magic overseas, but from what little I do, it seems that it was common for the magic and practices of old cultures to be lost to conversion? Such a shame.

In any case, that is a fascinating difference. Truly even you who are born with power cannot even see them? I wonder if spirits are so rare there. Still, that's not entirely unheard of. Even in our circles, the ability to harness magic and natural aptitude towards sensing it are not inseparable. A monk may practice for decades, devoutly reciting sutras, and hone a level of spiritual power that even he is not fully aware of.

As for our spellcraft. That's quite a large topic to cover, so I wonder if a demonstration might be more appealing? Would you be interested in a mutual exchange, Mr. Courcey?

Oh? I am quite interested in the preservation of techniques myself, so I would be delighted to hear about it. This is in England? Or was it something you discovered in this resort? I must admit, I have come across some rather unorthodox practitioners of magic myself, in this place.

In any case, it may be a good idea to demonstrate somewhere with a bit of open space. Just to be on the safe side. Would the rooftop gardens work for you?

[Omg that's always the worst, I feel you... And yes, that works perfectly for me- link away when you're ready!]
